As a die-hard Houston resident and an even more die-hard Patriots fan, I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with anything related to Dallas (The Cowboys as America’s team? Come on!). However, when I heard about the Texas Stock Exchange (TXSE) setting up shop in Big D, my interest was piqued. After all, as an avid user of Dividends360.com, I know a thing or two about investing and the importance of diversifying a portfolio beyond, say, a Tom Brady NFT collection!

The TXSE has plans to establish a new national stock exchange based in Dallas. This ambitious project raised approximately $120 million from prominent firms like BlackRock and Citadel Securities, among others, thus providing some hope that the exchange could actually come to fruition, unlike, say, a Cowboys playoff win!!

So, what is a stock exchange?

A stock exchange is a regulated marketplace where publicly traded companies list their shares. The exchanges serve as platforms for investors to trade securities by providing the prices of securities and facilitating the efficient transfer of capital between buyers and sellers. Historically, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the NASDAQ have dominated the U.S. stock market, but the TXSE aims to provide a competitive alternative, particularly for companies in the Southeastern region of the country.

The TXSE becoming a reality is not a Hail Mary pass, as exchanges have risen and fallen over the years. One notable example is the American Stock Exchange (AMEX), founded in 1908, which initially focused on trading smaller companies and specialized securities. However, as larger exchanges expanded their offerings and technological advancements reshaped the industry, the AMEX struggled to maintain its competitive edge and ultimately merged with the NYSE in 2008.

The fate of the TXSE remains to be seen, but its backers are confident in its potential to disrupt the status quo. By offering a competitive alternative and capitalizing on Texas’s favorable business climate, the TXSE aims to attract a diverse range of companies and investors, driving economic growth and innovation in the state for years to come. And who knows, maybe the TXSE will make me a fan of at least one thing in Big D!
